About the script

The script is written in rhyming couplets, making it very straightforward to learn. Like any good writer, Jill Priest was keen to draw directly from the source material – in this case, The Bible. And so, within the witty dialogue and lyrics, there are plenty of phrases lifted straight from the Gospels, but set to a modern beat. The story is told via narrators and the characters themselves, and is funny, succinct and at times moving.

Two versions of the script are provided. The Director’s Script is marked up with lighting plot, microphone plot, props and backstage calls (see Sample Script). The Cast Script has only the dialogue and stage directions and can be photocopied under licence for cast members. The script as it is written is for a cast of 60, but it can be easily adapted to suit any sized cast (see Casting).
